One of my favorite songs is “Wassup” by Rich Kidz. If you’re from Atlanta or have outstanding musical taste, you already know the collective claps and genuine feeling of joy and energy the crowd has when the DJ turns this on. When outside opens back up, I’m dedicating my first day out to Rich Kidz because they didn’t have to show up and show out in the studio like they did.

I can see myself now surrounded by my friends at a party clapping for my life while the song plays. The synchronicity always gives me a profound feeling of community - everyone in the room knows the clapping cadence, the lyrics and the vibe. It’s a genuine feeling of gratification.
A consistent theme I’ve noticed over the last few weeks amid COVID-19 is how beautifully our country has come together in serving one another. As challenging as sheltering in-place has been for some, it’s an act of greater good to our friends and family to keep people safe. By staying inside, we’ve had to put our selfishness aside and contribute to something greater than ourselves. To me, that’s the definition of community and this feeling of community is at the core of my gratitude while writing this.
Community has made me a believer in the good of the universe. I have been so fortunate to have a tribe of faithful friends and family that have poured love and sacrifice into me and because of that, I’m able to return the favor. During this past month of separating ourselves, I’ve seen more selflessness and genuine connections than I’ve seen in years.
I’ve had friends share resources with me to find a job because as a freelancer, I’m not always financially stable.
I’ve had friends send me food packages to ease the load of purchasing groceries.
I’ve had friends pray for me and send me scriptures.
I’ve had friends listen to me sob my eyes out and promise me it’s OK to cry.
I’ve reconnected with friends who remind me that full circle moments exist.
I’ve done my job as a daughter to make sure my parents are safe at home amidst the virus.
As a collective, we are all doing our part to make sure that those around us are aware that no matter the social distancing, no matter the additional weeks or months we’re separated from the ones we love, no matter the current circumstances = community is at the core of our prosperity. WE ALL WE GOT!
Today, what I know for sure is that we are better together. I have never felt this sentiment more in my life.
You know the vibes -
WAKE UP AND GIVE ME 5!
I am grateful for the sun’s warmth on my skin when I stand outside.
I am grateful for grace.
I am grateful for my therapist and her guidance.
I am grateful for my book club ( s/o Books and Shit) and our April book of the month.
I am grateful that I am able to spend time with both of my parents.
Pull out your journals, speak out loud, tweet it out and let the Universe know why you’re giving thanks today!
Some think pieces to guide you in gratitude for the next week:
Identify 3 people to reach out to and check on. Be intentional.
How has community shaped your outlook on life?
How has your inner circle evolved over the years? Have you grown or is it time to do some spring cleaning?
Curate your social media platforms to be reflective of the energy you desire. Unfollow some accounts or mute people who disrupt your spirit. It’s okay to block some folks too, ok?!
Support a friend. Stream their music, read their blog, publicize their business, etc.
Until next time, I pray that you find wonder in all that you do and give thanks for the little things that add to the bigger picture.
your little dose of happiness,
Lauriel
